Two Machining Methods Of CNC Turning And Milling Compound Machining

Jul 21, 2022

According to CNC turning and milling composite processing manufacturers, although CNC machine tools are widely accepted and used, the development of metal cutting machine tools is still too traditional, and specific machine tools are developed according to their respective functions such as turning, milling and drilling. If machining centers that hold rotating tools such as milling cutters or drills can be integrated for CNC turning operations, then downtime can be reduced and the processing efficiency;

This demand for efficiency has led to the change of adding a rotary power head to the traditional CNC lathe, and thus realized the combined turning and milling process. Today's modern multitasking machines have a B-axis that rotates and moves the tool, advanced control systems and cutting-edge CAM software, allowing the workpiece to complete major machining tasks in a single setup.

There are two main processing forms in CNC turning-milling composite machining: contour machining when the workpiece is parallel to the axis of the tool; surface machining when the workpiece is perpendicular to the axis of the tool. Contour turning-milling machining is similar to machining the inner and outer contours of rotating workpieces by means of helical interpolation milling; while surface machining turning-milling machining can only machine the outer surface.

Although CNC mill-turn machining looks very similar to turning, as simple as turning with a rotating milling cutter, the two machining methods are fundamentally different. The cutting speed of turning and milling is determined by the rotation speed of the milling cutter; the cutting speed different from turning is defined by the rotation speed of the workpiece. The rotational speed of the workpiece in turn-mill machining is only related to the feed.
