What Are The Characteristics And Classification Of CNC Turning Tools

Jul 25, 2022

What are the characteristics of CNC lathe tools? CNC lathe tools and tool system have the following characteristics:

1. Generalization, regularization and serialization of blades or cutters.

2. Standardization and typification of geometric parameters and cutting parameters of blades or cutters.

3. The blade or tool material and cutting parameters should match the material of the workpiece to be processed.

4. The blade or cutter has high durability and good processing rigidity.

5. The positioning reference accuracy of the blade in the cutter bar is high.

6. The cutter bar should have high strength, rigidity and wear resistance.

What are the classifications of CNC lathe tools?

1. Classification according to processing purpose

Lathes are mainly used for machining rotary surfaces, such as cylindrical surfaces, conical surfaces, circular arc surfaces, threads, grooves and other cutting processing. CNC lathe tools can be divided into cylindrical turning tools, inner hole turning tools, thread turning tools, grooving and other types.

2. Classify according to the shape of the tool tip

According to the shape of the tool tip, CNC turning tools can generally be divided into three categories: one is pointed turning tools, circular arc turning tools and forming turning tools.

The tip of a pointed turning tool is formed by the intersection of linear main and auxiliary cutting edges. Commonly used turning tools include end turning tools, cutting tools, 90 degree cylindrical turning tools, etc.

The shape of the main cutting edge of the arc turning tool is an arc with small roundness error or contour error. Since every point on the turning tool arc is the cutting point of the tool, the arrival point of the turning tool is not on the arc edge, but on the center of the arc edge.

Formed turning tools are also known as template turning tools. The contour shape of the machined parts is completely determined by the shape and size of the cutting edge of the turning tools. The commonly used turning tools include small radius arc turning tools, non grooving tools, thread turning tools, etc.

In order to catch up with the CNC lathe, in addition to thread processing, we should try not to use or use less forming lathe tools.

3. Classification according to the structure of turning tool

According to the structure of turning tools, CNC turning tools can be divided into integral turning tools, welding turning tools and mechanical clamping turning tools.

The integral turning tool mainly refers to the integral high-speed steel turning tool. It is usually used for small turning tools, thread turning tools and forming turning tools with complex shapes. It has the characteristics of good bending strength, impact toughness, simple manufacture, convenient grinding and sharp edge.

The welded turning tool is formed by grinding the cemented carbide blade fixed on the tool body by welding. This kind of turning tool has the advantages of simple structure, convenient manufacture and good rigidity, but it has low bending strength and poor impact toughness. The cutting edge is not as sharp as the steel turning tool, so it is not easy to make complex tools.
