Sharpening of lathe cutting knives

Jul 29, 2022

The basic procedure for sharpening a cutting tool on a lathe is roughly the same as that for sharpening an external turning tool. A lathe but also has its peculiarities.

The general procedure for sharpening a cutting knife on a lathe is:

   1) Trim the bottom plane of the cutter body to make the cutter body straight and stable.

   2) Roughly grind the front surface so that the front surface is parallel to the bottom plane of the cutter body.

   3) For rough grinding of the main back surface, the main cutting edge is parallel to the outer circle of the grinding wheel, and the cutter body and the grinding wheel are inclined by 60-8. , to form the correct main back angle.

   4) Taking the plane on the left side of the cutter body as the benchmark, the lathe grinds the secondary rear of the left side of the cutter body, and at the same time ensures the secondary declination and secondary clearance angle.

   5) Sharpen the rear side of the right side, taking into account the following requirements:

① Take the center of the cutter head as the axis of symmetry to ensure the width n of the main cutting edge.

②Ensure the length L of the cutter head.

③ Grind out the auxiliary declination angle and ensure the auxiliary clearance angle.

    6) Fine grinding the front, sharpening the chip groove. The lathe is best to use a beveled and wider open chip flute to form a larger radius of the chip, which is discharged to the same side in an orderly manner. The lathe should also guarantee the required rake angle.

    7) Fine grinding the main back and transition edge, cutting edge chamfering.
