Medical imaging systems contain so many high-tech electronic components that it is easy to overlook the impact of mechanical components on whether such systems fail in the field. Take the linear guide as an example. They can be found in a variety of imaging systems, from traditional X-ray machines to advanced systems such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), and Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

Typically, rails are used to move and support the motorized couch to position the patient under the scanning element of the system but are sometimes also used to assist axes of motion.


Operating the electric bed may seem simple, but it is very critical. If the linear guide fails, even the most advanced imaging system can only stop working. These medical imaging applications are prone to failure when the rails are often not strong enough to handle the weight of the moving patient bed. Under these loads, which typically exceed 1,300 kg, the rolling elements installed in the guide rails are prone to misalignment and premature wear. Then, there is another aspect that determines the success of medical imaging applications and is often underestimated. That is, the bearings must run quietly and smoothly, not only for image quality but also for patient comfort. Studies have shown that mechanical noise negatively affects patients, increasing their stress levels and, in extreme cases, causing panic. Misalignment also plays a role here, making the bearing noisy and reducing its rolling capacity.
